How to Choose a High-Fibre Snack
WHAT MAKES A SNACK GENUINELY HIGH IN FIBRE
In Great Britain a food can only be labelled 'high fibre' if it contains at least 6g of fibre per 100g, and 'source of fibre' at 3g per 100g. Check the per 100g column, not the front of pack.
- Read the fibre line on the back of pack, per 100g and per portion.
- Compare fibre against calories: a snack with 19g fibre per 100g at 136-137 kcal per pack works harder than a 5g per 100g snack at 158 kcal.
- Watch portion size. A 'per 25g' figure on one pack is not comparable to 'per 30g' on another.
HOW MUCH FIBRE DO YOU ACTUALLY NEED
UK adults are advised to eat 30g of fibre a day, and average intake sits well below that. Most people are closer to 20g.
- A 30g pack of NuPop provides 5.7-5.9g of fibre, so roughly a fifth of the daily 30g target.
- Fibre from snacks adds up alongside wholegrains, pulses, fruit and vegetables.
- Increase fibre gradually and drink plenty of fluid.
HOW THE MAIN SNACK CATEGORIES COMPARE
Popcorn is a wholegrain, which is why it starts from a better fibre base than crisps, tortilla chips, cereal bars or chocolate.
- Crisps and tortilla chips: typically 4.9-5.7g fibre per 100g and around 143-158 kcal per 30g.
- Nuts: good fibre and protein, but energy dense at roughly 179 kcal per 30g.
- Cereal bars and chocolate: typically the lowest fibre of the group, at about 1g and 0.7g per 30g.
- NuPop: 19-19.7g fibre per 100g at 136-137 kcal per 30g pack.
WHY HFSS COMPLIANCE MATTERS WHEN YOU BUY
HFSS stands for high in fat, salt or sugar. Products classified as HFSS face restrictions on promotion and placement in larger UK retailers. All four NuPop flavours are HFSS compliant.
- HFSS status is scored with the UK nutrient profiling model, where fibre and protein pull a score down.
- For retailers, compliant products can be sited and promoted where HFSS products cannot.
- For shoppers, it is a quick signal that a snack is not loaded with fat, salt or sugar.
CHECK THE INGREDIENT LIST LENGTH
Shorter ingredient lists are easier to check and usually mean fewer additives. NuPop flavours use 8 to 10 ingredients and 100% natural flavours.
- Salted Caramel uses 8 ingredients, Maple & Sea Salt and Apple & Cinnamon use 9, Smoky BBQ uses 10.
- NuPop's seasoning contains chicory inulin, a prebiotic fibre, and the range is fortified with calcium.
- If you need allergen or dietary detail, always read the pack you are buying.
MATCH THE SNACK TO THE OCCASION
Desk snacking, lunchboxes, post-workout, travel and movie night all pull in different directions on portion size, mess and calorie density.
- Single 30g packs remove portion guesswork at a desk or in a lunchbox.
- For movie night, a fixed pack size beats a sharing bag you keep dipping into.
- See the snack guides for an occasion-by-occasion breakdown.
